Annapolis to West River Race & Heintz Regatta

Race from Annapolis and Billy Heintz Regatta

Clay Taylor in Endeavor handily won the Annapolis to West River race by staying out in the middle of the Bay and using the favorable current all the way to Thomas Pt. and then one tack to WRSC. He observed the crab floats since the schedule tide shift was delayed by over an hour. Six 20s participated with Osprey and Contrary in second and third.

For the Billy Heintz WRSC annual regatta, Bob Blomquist in Gracie dominated the five boat fleet in pretty heavy winds on both Saturday and Sunday. There was a capsize, broken headstay, ripped up fairlead, among the damages as we either had to deal with large powerboat wakes on Saturday off Rhode River, or a rolling sea on Sunday off Curtis point. American Red Cross One Design Regatta

Seven Chesapeake 20s raced at the Miles River Yacht Club Regatta on August 6 and 7, 2011. Most towed over by Robin’s powerboat, and Barbara’s sailboat, except for David Childs who achieved one of his bucket lists by sailing over single-handed. Unfortunately, the bucket list came without a bucket which he could surely have used at the regatta.

The winds were southerly both days, and by the fourth race on Saturday, there were gusts up to 20 knots. In early racing the wind was out of Miles River, but shifted to off the shore.

There were plenty of shifts, but generally going left paid off on Saturday, and right on Sunday. On Sunday, there were good puffs coming out of St Michaels, and a huge calm area in the center which filled in as approaching the finish.

On Saturday, there were two capsizes: Heather Childs that needed to be towed in (but no damage), and Osprey that got right back up with hardly any water in the bilge.

Seven races were held with a throw out. With three firsts, Gracie led the way with Endeavor and Stormy, next in order. As you can see from the score sheet below, there were plenty of position changes, and four out of the seven scored at least one first.

Miles River Yacht Club Perpetual

Miles River Yacht Club Perpetual Trophy

In 2011, the Chesapeake 20 Association provided a perpetual trophy to the Miles River Yacht Club to be awarded to first place at their annual one-design regatta. As noted below, Chesapeake 20s and their predecessors, Twenty Foot Knockabouts, have been racing at MRYC since the early 1930s.

This oldest MRYC trophy was donated by the Kolb family on behalf of Doug Kolb who won first place in the 1947 regatta aboard Jade #37. We have incomplete records of racing over the years at MRYC, but a very interesting race took place in 1935 in which Vanity won the free-for-all (which means anything goes including extra sails) while nearly sinking.

Summer Series, July 29, 2011

Six Chesapeake 20s came out for the summer series on Sunday with pleasant weather, low humidity and steady winds. The A-Cat fleet provided an excellent race committee and had to shift the course as the wind veered from the east to south east.

Prior to the first race, it appeared that the left was favored and winds to the right were more screechy. Gracie went right but not too far to keep out the adverse current. By, the second race, the wind shifted further to the right and Gracie made the weather mark without tacking. Stormy had to easy off and close reach to the mark with Gracie underneath getting their first. On the second lap, Stormy went around the mark second and benefited from the increasing wind, did not poll out the jib and passed Gracie – holding her off at the finish.

For the third race, the course was shifted further right. Gracie again led the way and Spirit nipped Stormy at the finish. As the wind increased, C-20s with very light crews had a hard time keeping pace. Racing was close throughout the fleet with fourth to six place only a point apart. Kudos goes to Endeavor who did well with Matt, a new sailor who learned about us on the website. He certainly got an exciting time on the trapeze.

During the day, several thunderstorms passed to the south. For the fourth race, the wind increased to 20 plus knots left over from them. Immediately, 20s struggled to get off the starting line with jibs and mains luffing. As we went up the weather leg, Gracie took down her jib. Stormy got to the weather mark first but with Osprey capsizing, all of the 20s decided to quit the race and sail back to the club. Osprey finally got righted, towed in and bailed out. While lots of the 20s took on water, all returned undamaged.

Tere 3 great races Sunday. The heat on shore was horrible, but out on the bay it was breezy and almost cool!

Gerhard with a wrapped ankle, limping, and on pain medication won the first race.

Robin nosed by Clay at the finish line win the 2nd race.

Chris Snowber in Aurora nosed by Clay and Robin to win the 3rd very tight race.

(Note: Andrew Resnik was on the wire. Chris did a great job keeping the boat from tipping over. )

CHESAPEAKE 20s FOR SALE

1. Grace # 302 for Sale. $15,000 or best offer. Contact Bob Blomquist at 410 788-4585 or 410 241-9617. Gracie is at West River Sailing Club for inspection and includes trailer and two sets of sails. She is a very fast Chesapeake 20 and the winner of many regattas.

Bob Blomquist built Gracie as the second cold-molded Chesapeake 20 in 2001. It has built about a dozen wooden boats but Gracie was the most challenging. He took measurements off Endeavor and had the lines corrected by a naval architect. Thus, his boat is the most accurate representation of the original Capt. Dick Hartge Chesapeake 20 since older boats lose some of their original shape. See Chesapeake 20 fleet on our web site for construction details of Gracie. The materials alone to build Gracie costs about $15,000 without considering Bob and Glenda's work on her construction over 3 years. A comparable 20 would cost many times more, especially if professional constructed.

2. Clay Taylor has bought the Chesapeake 20 molds and Peter Bell Jr. built a new fiberglass 20 in 2010. She will be available for sale and racing in the 2011 season. The boat has a mast but requires sails, boom and other fittings. New owner can fit out the 20 as desired to suit their concept. Contact Clay directly if you are interested in buying this glass 20, #211.

3. Restoration of Shamrock #6, Volunteer #27, and Scotch-N-Water #80 Clay Taylor and the Chesapeake 20 Association have acquired several Chesapeake 20s that are available for restoration. We have a firm estimate for the restoration of the hulls only from Windward Yachts, a restoration company about an hour north of Toronto. Windward Yachts restored the C-20 Yankee #88 to original construction including steam bent oak ribs, centerboard, etc. We have an estimate of $15,000 for a restored Chesapeake 20 hull. We are prepared to help in the transport of one or more of the classic Chesapeake 20s above for a truly interested buyer.

Nelson Parks Regatta

Six Chesapeake 20s participated in Nelson Parks Regatta on July 17, 2011 which honors the builder of the first glass 20s. The wind was very light and shifty from the west in the cove. Gracie went right and caught a wind shift out of the creek to take the first race, but after that it generally paid to go left and get streaks of wind and puffs out of West River. In the light conditions, there were plenty of changes in the lead. It was tight competition until the final race when the usual southerly filled in, and a short and fast race took place across the cove. In this race, starting near the far pin and getting the lift out of the Bay paid off with Gracie and then Stormy getting to the weather mark first and second.

We had a excellent race committee and they worked hard to get the five races off on time and set true courses in the very shifty conditions. In general, the racing conditions were pleasant with temperature in the 80s and low humility.

Summer Series

In very light and shifting winds, four Chesapeake 20s raced in the second summer series in the West River cove. Each race was one lap in which the first race the wind was northerly, and the last two southerly. Good starts and finding the wind puffs were the keys to victory.

Neal Kramer - Chesapeake 20 Pioneer

Neal Kramer died on June 8, 2011. He was the last surviving brother of the Kramer family in which four of the five raced Chesapeake 20s. His father, Andrew Kramer who was president of the Annapolis Bank and Trust, financed the construction of twenty Chesapeake 20s in 1939. Neal raced Penguins and Chesapeake 20 and owned Serenade in which he was a successful racer in the early 40s and 60s. Below is a more detailed history of his racing in Chesapeake 20s.

Second Spring Series May 22, 2011

Down River and Rock Hall Regatta

The down river race from Chestertown to Rock Hall was a drifter and took six hours with Stormy leading the Chesapeake 20s at the shorten finish. Osprey won the two day regatta that was also very light winds, with Endeavor and Stormy in second and third. The most exciting part of the weekend event on June 10-12 was the thunderstorms on the tow back to West River. See details on the regatta below.

Doug Kolb, Chesapeake 20 Pioneer

Doug Kolb was a pioneer in Chesapeake 20s. He died on April 25, 2005 and his wife, Joan Mary Kolb, died on April 16, 2011. The family donated is trophies to WRSC and the Chesapeake 20 class. Doug Kolb raced Jade, #37 from 1947 until 1954 and was a charter boat captain for over 46 years out of Rockhold Creek. He was active at West River Sailing Club and its commodore in 1953. His impressive race record from the late 40s and early 50s is below. Doug Kolb and Jade were featured on the front page of the Evening Star in 1953 at the President's Cup Regatta along with a photo and article announcing the wedding of Senator John F. Kennedy to Jacqueline Bouvier.

Millie Rhodes

At the age of 83, Millie Rhodes died on April 8, 2011. Millie will be most remembered as the newsletter editor for the West River Sailing Club, and frequent dinner guest at the Friday night cook outs. Millie was a strong supporter of the Chesapeake 20 class, and for many years participated as a member of the race committee. She owned America in the 1990s and her pier at the head of West River was frequently used to dock Chesapeake 20s. She also hosted Chesapeake 20 get-togethers at her home.
